Louisville, Kentucky — An explosion at a manufacturing facility in Louisville on Tuesday afternoon injured at least 11 people, according to local authorities. The incident, classified as a “hazardous materials incident” by Louisville Metro Emergency Services, took place at the Givaudan Sense Colour facility.

The University of Louisville Hospital reported receiving seven patients from the explosion, including two individuals in critical condition. Injuries among the victims include burns and blast wounds, a hospital official confirmed.

Cause of Explosion Under Investigation

The explosion occurred around 3 p.m. local time, though the exact cause remains unknown, officials stated. All individuals injured in the incident were employees of Givaudan Sense Colour, a plant specializing in natural food colorings. One employee who was initially trapped was successfully rescued, while others were evacuated.

Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported. Drone footage from Louisville’s ABC affiliate WHAS reveals extensive damage to the facility.

Residents within two blocks of the facility, located at 1901 Payne St., were evacuated as a precaution. Additionally, a shelter-in-place order was initially issued for those within a 1-mile radius of the site; however, this order has since been lifted.

Agents from Louisville’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) are on-site and assisting with the ongoing investigation into the “critical incident.”

Local air monitoring has shown no hazardous readings, and officials have assured nearby residents that air quality remains clear. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear issued a statement urging the community to adhere to local guidance while responders work to secure the area. “We are praying for the safety of all involved,” Beshear said.

The Givaudan Sense Colour facility is known for producing colors used in food and other applications, according to the company’s website. Further details on the incident are expected as authorities continue their investigation.
