Mattel Apologizes for “Wicked Doll” Packaging Error Linking to Porn Site

 

 

Mattel has issued an apology after packaging some of its new “Wicked” movie dolls, including a misprinted web address leading to a pornographic website, rather than the intended promotional site for the upcoming musical film.

The Wicked Doll is based on characters from the highly anticipated “Wicked” movie musical featuring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, were packaged with an incorrect URL, which shares the same name as the film but instead redirects to an adult content site.

Customers who noticed the error posted images of the packaging on social media, highlighting the mishap. YouTube creator Sarah Genao, known for her Lego-related videos, told media that she discovered the issue on Reddit before confirming it herself during a visit to Target.

“I thought it was really funny initially, but I was also concerned because this went under the radar,” Genao said, noting that the dolls had been on store shelves for several weeks.

In a statement, Mattel expressed regret for the error, describing it as a “misprint.”

“Mattel was made aware of a misprint on the packaging of the Mattel Wicked collection dolls, primarily sold in the U.S., which intended to direct consumers to the official WickedMovie.com landing page. We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this,” the company said.

Mattel advised parents that the incorrect website is inappropriate for children and suggested that consumers with affected products either discard the packaging or obscure the link. They also encouraged customers to reach out to Mattel Customer Service for additional assistance.

The “Wicked” movie musical is set to premiere in theaters on Nov. 22.
