FRESNO, Calif. – The California Department of Justice (DOJ) is investigating the death of a Fresno man who was fatally shot by his parole officer on Christmas Eve, officials confirmed Friday.

The deceased, identified as Jeremy Sanchez, 26, was visited at his home by his parole officer when a “physical altercation” occurred, according to a statement from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR).

The parole officer discharged their weapon during the confrontation, striking Sanchez. Despite the officer’s attempts to administer lifesaving measures, Sanchez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fresno police responded to the incident after three gunshots were reported in the area, as per the Los Angeles Times.

The parole officer involved in the shooting has approximately 13 years of experience, according to Pedro Calderon Michel, a CDCR spokesperson. However, the officer’s name and further details about the incident have not been disclosed.
