Brazilian Federal Police Arrest Five Officers Accused of Coup Plot

São Paulo, Brazil — Brazil’s federal police arrested five individuals on Tuesday, including four military officers and one federal police officer, accused of plotting a coup to overthrow the government following the 2022 elections. Authorities say the suspects had plans to assassinate then-President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, his running mate Geraldo Alckmin, and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

The arrested individuals included retired Brig. Gen. Mário Fernandes, who had served as interim general secretary in Jair Bolsonaro’s Cabinet. Fernandes, along with the other suspects, is believed to have played a key role in a broader plot to undermine Brazil’s democratic institutions and assassinate key political figures.

Details of the Alleged Coup Plot

The investigation, authorized by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, revealed that the suspects had coordinated actions with pro-Bolsonaro protest camps and were planning to disrupt the inauguration of the elected government in January 2023. The plot reportedly included various assassination scenarios involving explosives or poison during official events. However, no attempts to carry out the attacks were made, and the police investigation uncovered that the plotters had even surveilled and tracked de Moraes’ movements.

The police also discovered messages and documents indicating that the plotters had monitored de Moraes’ activities, including an aborted operation to capture him in December 2022. Police had previously seized documents detailing plans to seize power, falsely claim election fraud, and stage a new election, backed by military leaders from Bolsonaro’s administration.

Connections to Bolsonaro’s Cabinet

The investigation also found evidence linking the coup plotters to Bolsonaro’s government. Some of the plans were said to have been discussed and printed inside the presidential palace, and former defense minister Gen. Walter Braga Netto’s residence. Bolsonaro, who has long criticized the Supreme Court and de Moraes, is under investigation for his possible role in inciting the January 8, 2023 uprising, when thousands of his supporters stormed government buildings in Brasília.

Recent Developments and Arrests

The federal police’s actions on Tuesday came as part of a broader investigation into the efforts to subvert the election result. The suspects, including Fernandes, were arrested, and three search warrants were executed. The officers involved in the plot were also prevented from contacting each other and had their passports seized.

The investigation also revealed that some of the suspects were previously involved in discussions regarding the creation of a “Crisis Cabinet” that would take over the country following a successful coup.

Response from Bolsonaro’s Son and Legal Action

Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of the former president, downplayed the plot, claiming that no assassination attempt was carried out. However, Supreme Court Justice Gilmar Mendes emphasized that the actions went beyond mere plotting and were in the process of being implemented. The Brazilian government is actively pursuing all leads, with more arrests possible as the investigation unfolds.

Impact on Brazilian Politics and Security

This latest development is a significant chapter in the ongoing political and security concerns in Brazil. The coup plot and the attacks on democratic institutions echo the tensions that followed the controversial 2022 election, where Bolsonaro’s supporters staged nationwide protests challenging the election results.

In March, two high-ranking Brazilian military leaders testified that they had rejected a plan from Bolsonaro to stay in power after his election loss. Investigators have found links between the coup plot and military personnel close to Bolsonaro’s administration, raising questions about the former president’s influence on these actions.

On Wednesday, a separate incident involving an explosion outside the Supreme Court in Brasília was linked to the far-right rhetoric and violence that has been escalating in Brazil. Federal police have initiated terrorism investigations into the attack.

Ongoing Investigation

The investigation into the coup plot and related incidents is ongoing. As authorities continue to gather evidence, Brazilian officials have vowed to protect the country’s democracy and ensure that those involved in the plot are held accountable.

Lula, who was hosting the final day of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro at the time of the arrests, was briefed on the developments but did not mention the arrests in his speech. The Brazilian army confirmed that the arrested suspects were not involved in security operations for the G20 summit.
