A 37-year-old backpacker tragically passed away after experiencing “sudden onset medical complications” while hiking in Michigan’s Isle Royale National Park, according to authorities.
The woman, who has not yet been publicly identified, was from Battle Creek, Michigan. She was hiking with a companion late Monday afternoon near Lake LeSage when she began to suffer from unexpected medical issues, the National Park Service (NPS) reported in a statement.
“As her condition worsened, she eventually became unable to walk, lost consciousness, and stopped breathing,” park officials said. Despite CPR efforts, attempts to revive her were unsuccessful.
Nearby backpackers managed to contact Michigan State Police, who then alerted the National Park Service dispatch center, the NPS said.
“Park ranger/EMTs reached the group Monday evening and remained with them overnight. Early Tuesday morning, a team from Isle Royale arrived to transport the group from the remote area,” authorities added.
