The case unfolded last week when the sister contacted the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, saying she had seen a photo of her missing brother in a USA Today article published earlier this year. The article featured an unidentified, nonverbal man and appealed to the public for help in identifying him.

Key Breakthrough in the Case
Deputy Derek Kennemore of the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office followed up on the tip and contacted the hospital featured in the article. However, the patient had been transferred to another Los Angeles-area hospital in July.
Los Angeles police joined the investigation, fingerprinting the man at the second hospital. The fingerprints confirmed his identity as the missing man reported in 1999.

Family Reunited After Decades
Kennemore delivered the news to the man’s sister, who was overwhelmed with emotion.
“She was super excited,” said Capt. Mike Carney of the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office. “She was over the moon and anxious to call other family members to let them know. It’s gonna make their Thanksgiving that much better.”
The sheriff’s office is keeping the man’s identity private at the family’s request.

Carney emphasized the importance of perseverance in missing persons cases.
“This is a perfect example of why you never give up,” he said. “Be tenacious when it comes to these things because there are family members that want answers.”
The family is now preparing to reunite with their loved one, bringing a heartwarming conclusion to a decades-long search.
