Teen Surfer’s Death Third Fatal Shark Attack in South Australia Since May

A young surfer, 15-year-old Khai Cowley, tragically lost his life in what marks the third deadly shark incident in South Australia’s waters in recent times.

The attack, involving a suspected great white shark, occurred while Cowley was surfing with his father near Ethel Beach on the Yorke Peninsula, located west of Adelaide, his hometown. Despite efforts to save him, emergency responders were unable to resuscitate him after he was brought ashore.

Previous incidents in May and October also resulted in fatalities due to shark attacks in remote areas of South Australia, with neither of the victims’ bodies being recovered.

Peter Malinauskas, the Premier of South Australia, expressed his concern over these incidents, highlighting that the state has witnessed 11 fatal shark attacks since 2000. He noted the alarming frequency of these events, with three fatalities occurring since May.

Malinauskas acknowledged the challenges in enhancing beach safety measures beyond Adelaide, the state’s capital and most populous city.

Outside South Australia, there was another fatal shark attack in 2023, where a 16-year-old girl was killed by a bull shark in a river in Perth, located on Australia’s west coast.Shark attack

Andrew Fox, a shark specialist based in Adelaide, commented on the unusual increase in shark encounters in South Australia this year, including two non-lethal incidents. He suggested that certain conditions, such as the overcast weather at Ethel Beach during the attack, might contribute to sharks becoming more prone to attack.
