A tragic incident occurred in Louisiana where a 6-month-old boy died after being left in a hot car for several hours, authorities reported.
The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office stated that the baby was discovered deceased in the backseat by his parent at around 5:46 p.m. on Tuesday.
According to the sheriff’s office, the parents realized they had forgotten to drop the baby off at daycare that morning when they went to pick him up after work.
On that day in Baton Rouge, the heat index—a measure of how hot it feels with humidity—reached a blistering 112 degrees.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing. The coroner will perform an autopsy to determine how long the baby was in the car, as per the sheriff’s office.
So far this year, at least 16 children have died in hot cars across the United States, according to the national nonprofit KidsAndCars.org.
