The shooting occurred shortly after 5 p.m. during an exchange of gunfire between two groups. Authorities believe innocent bystanders may have been hit during the incident. In total, ten people were shot, including a 24-year-old who died from their injuries.
Five of the victims were taken to hospitals by ambulance, while the remaining five were transported by private vehicles, according to MNPD Public Affairs Officer Brooke Reese. Some of those injured are suspected of being involved in the shooting, Reese added.
Injuries ranged from minor to critical, with some victims sustaining graze wounds, Aaron said. A handgun was recovered at the scene, and officials believe multiple handguns were used in the incident.
Fire and police personnel, who were already on-site for the homecoming parade, responded immediately when the gunfire erupted, using their belts to apply tourniquets to the victims, Nashville Fire Department PIO Kendra Loney stated.
Most of the homecoming attendees were at the Tennessee State University football game at Nissan Stadium when the shooting occurred, said Nashville North Precinct Commander Anthony McClain. Reflecting on the incident, McClain commented, “A few folks ruined it for everybody.”
