Heavy Snow and Avalanches Threaten Sierra Nevada

California is bracing for intense winter weather this weekend, with winter storm warnings in place for the Sierra Nevada mountains until 10 p.m. Saturday. Forecasters predict 6 to 24 inches of snow, with total accumulations reaching 2 feet in some areas.

An avalanche watch has also been issued for the backcountry regions of the Greater Lake Tahoe area, as fresh snow and strong winds increase the risk. This alert does not include highways or ski areas where mitigation efforts are underway.

Meanwhile, wind alerts warn of gusts up to 50 to 60 mph across much of northern and central California’s valleys on Saturday.

Icy Conditions Grip the Midwest

The Midwest is dealing with treacherous mixed precipitation, particularly in Iowa, Nebraska, and Illinois, as a warm air mass interacts with sub-freezing ground temperatures.

Eastern Iowa is under an ice storm warning until 3 p.m. Saturday, with up to 0.30 inches of ice expected. This could lead to power outages, damaged trees, and slick roads. Surrounding states face a winter weather advisory, as freezing rain, sleet, and snow spread across the region.

Up to 1 inch of snow or sleet and 0.10 inches of ice are possible in advisory areas. Mixed precipitation will move eastward into northeast Iowa and southern Wisconsin by late Saturday afternoon, while rain spreads through Illinois, Memphis, and Nashville.
