LONDON – The UK Labour Party suspended British MP Mike Amesbury on Sunday following the release of a video showing an alleged assault. In the footage, Amesbury, 55, appears to punch a man, knocking him to the ground on a sidewalk and continuing to strike him as bystanders urge him to stop.

Amesbury, who represents Runcorn and Helsby in northwest England, was suspended pending an internal party investigation. The incident, which reportedly took place early Saturday morning, is also under review by Cheshire Police, who are investigating a reported assault on Main Street in Frodsham.

In a statement issued Saturday, Amesbury acknowledged the incident, stating he had reached out to law enforcement and pledged to cooperate fully with the investigation. “Last night, I was involved in an incident that took place after I felt threatened on the street following an evening out with friends,” he explained.

Surveillance footage shared by media shows Amesbury confronting the man, pointing at him and declaring, “You won’t ever threaten me again, will you?” before the altercation escalates.

On Friday, Amesbury had attended a community meeting focused on policing and public safety in his constituency, which he shared on social media. This is not the first time Amesbury has faced security concerns; last year, a 56-year-old man was convicted of stalking him at his constituency office in Frodsham.
