Train Accident in New Jersey Leaves Operator Dead, Several Injured

New Jersey — A train accident involving a New Jersey Transit commuter train claimed the life of the train operator and left nearly two dozen passengers injured on Monday morning.

The incident occurred shortly after 6 a.m. near the Roebling Station in Mansfield Township. According to a statement from NJ Transit, the River Line train struck a large chunk of a tree that had fallen onto the tracks. There were 42 passengers aboard the train at the time of the crash. Video footage from local news outlets showed a sizable portion of the tree lodged under the front of the train.

In total, 23 passengers were treated for minor injuries. NJ Transit officials stated that authorities are investigating how the tree ended up on the tracks in the first place.

As a result of the accident, River Line service was suspended in both directions between the Roebling and Trenton stations. Several nearby roads, including parts of U.S. Highway 130, were also temporarily closed while authorities conducted their investigation.
