The family of Austin Tice, an American freelance journalist and Marine Corps veteran who was kidnapped in Syria in 2012, has revealed that a credible source has confirmed he is alive and well.

“We have from a significant source that has already been vetted all over our government that Austin Tice is alive, Austin Tice is treated well, and there is no doubt about that,” said his mother, Debra Tice.

National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan met with Tice’s family at the White House on Friday, continuing efforts to secure the journalist’s release.

“Jake Sullivan has regularly met with the families of wrongfully detained Americans,” said White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre. “We’re going to continue to make sure that we get Americans who are wrongfully detained home to their families.”

The Biden administration has successfully facilitated the return of 75 unjustly detained Americans to date.

Despite reporters pressing for details about the source, the Tice family refrained from sharing more information, citing U.S. government restrictions they claim to not fully understand.

“We are working toward making more information public,” said Marc Tice, Austin’s father. He emphasized that the source is distinct from others that previously provided false hope, adding, “We are confident that this information is fresh. It indicates as late as earlier this year that Austin is alive and being cared for.”

The U.S. government has maintained its belief that Tice is alive, based largely on the absence of evidence suggesting otherwise.

Uncertainty remains about who is holding Tice. While the Biden administration states, “We know with certainty that he has been held by the Government of Syria,” officials also believe Tice may now be in the custody of another group.

The Syrian government has never publicly acknowledged involvement in Tice’s disappearance. During negotiations under the Trump administration, Syrian officials allegedly offered proof of life in exchange for sweeping U.S. concessions, but no information was ever provided after the U.S. declined the demands.
