A Texas deputy constable was tragically shot and killed on Tuesday while driving to work in his personal vehicle. The attack occurred when a man approached his car at a Houston intersection and fired multiple rounds, according to police.
The suspect, who fled the scene, led authorities on a high-speed chase that ended roughly 60 miles away in the waters off Galveston. The suspect attempted to evade capture by swimming but was apprehended with the assistance of a marine unit from the Port of Galveston Police Department.
The fallen deputy was identified as Maher Husseini, a Harris County constable since 2021. Authorities are still investigating the motive behind the shooting and whether Husseini was specifically targeted. Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz suggested that road rage might be a factor in the incident.
“It’s a devastating loss for the community, especially for someone who dedicated their life to public service,” Diaz remarked. “This is an absolute tragedy.”
Preliminary reports indicate that Husseini was not in uniform at the time of the shooting. Evidence at the scene included bullet holes in the passenger side window of his SUV.
Husseini was transported to a Houston hospital where he was pronounced dead, as confirmed by Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman.
The identity of the suspect in custody was not immediately disclosed. According to the Port of Galveston police, the suspect crashed his vehicle during the pursuit and subsequently attempted to escape by swimming. He was later found in the water and taken into custody, then transported to a hospital for evaluation.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a statement, affirming, “The dangerous criminal who ambushed and murdered Deputy Constable Husseini will face the full force of the law.”
