NEW YORK – A man accused of attacking two individuals with a knife in Manhattan’s Grand Central subway station faced multiple charges on Wednesday, including assault and menacing, police said.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:15 p.m. Tuesday and left a 42-year-old man with an injured wrist and a 26-year-old woman with a neck wound. Both victims were transported to Bellevue Hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.

The suspect was arrested and charged with assault, reckless endangerment, menacing, harassment, disorderly conduct, and weapons possession. Details regarding the suspect’s legal representation were not immediately available.

According to the New York Post, the female victim stated that she had just exited the No. 4 train and was heading to work when she was attacked. The assailant allegedly punched her to the ground while shouting, “What’s your problem?” He then lunged at her with a small knife, slashing her throat.

The attack has heightened concerns about subway safety, coming just hours after a man accused of setting a woman on fire aboard a New York City subway train appeared in court.

The suspect in Sunday’s fatal subway fire, Sebastian Zapeta, 33, appeared in Brooklyn criminal court earlier Tuesday. Charged with two counts of murder, Zapeta, identified by federal immigration officials as a Guatemalan citizen who entered the U.S. illegally, did not enter a plea or speak during the hearing.

Zapeta is currently held at Rikers Island and is expected to return to court on Friday. His lawyer has not requested bail.
