A South Carolina man was killed after triggering a booby trap inside a vacant residence in Saint Matthews on Monday evening, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to reports of a shooting and discovered 34-year-old Jordan Dove, of Lugoff, South Carolina, suffering from a gunshot wound. Authorities believe Dove had entered the home to check on the property, which belonged to a family member, when the trap was activated.
Investigators Uncover Booby Trap Inside the Residence
Upon arrival, investigators determined that the gunshot originated from within the home. Deputies found a shotgun rigged at the back door, designed to discharge upon entry. For safety reasons, law enforcement dismantled the trap while securing the scene.
Authorities also noted that the front door was barricaded, and no other individuals were inside the home at the time of the incident.
Victim Succumbs to Injuries
Emergency medical services transported Dove to a nearby hospital, but he did not survive his injuries, police confirmed.
Sheriff Thomas Summers emphasized the potential danger such traps pose, particularly for law enforcement officers responding to incidents.
“It is yet another example of the dangers faced by law enforcement every day,” Summers said in a statement.
