Prosecutors in southwest Poland have announced the arrest of a man accused of imprisoning and subjecting a woman to severe physical and psychological abuse for over five years.

According to officials from Legnica, the alleged abuse began in January 2019 and continued until last week in Gaiki, a village near Glogow. The suspect, identified only as 35-year-old Mateusz J. due to privacy laws, is accused of inflicting “special cruelty” on the victim.

The woman, now 30 years old, was reportedly confined in an unheated building without water or toilet facilities. During this period, she endured repeated sexual and physical abuse, with minimal access to food and drink. The suspect is also accused of humiliating and controlling her, keeping her in isolation, and only allowing her to leave the building with a hood over her eyes.

Local sources in Glogow have reported that the woman was held in a shed on the suspect’s family farm. The man’s elderly parents have claimed they were unaware of the abuse.

The arrest followed an incident where the suspect brought the woman to a hospital on Tuesday for treatment of a dislocated shoulder. It was there that she disclosed her situation to hospital staff.
