SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO – A 64-year-old American woman was medically evacuated from the Celebrity Apex cruise ship on Monday due to an abdominal medical emergency, the U.S. Coast Guard reported.

Incident Overview

The Celebrity Apex was approximately 140 nautical miles from Puerto Rico when the emergency occurred. Responding to the situation, Coast Guard personnel executed a helicopter rescue, transporting the woman, her spouse, and a cruise ship nurse off the vessel.

The evacuees were flown to an airport in San Juan, where local emergency responders were waiting. The patient was then transported to a nearby hospital for advanced medical care.
