A Greensboro police officer was tragically killed Monday morning while responding to a report of a man with a firearm at a Food Lion supermarket, authorities confirmed.

Officer Michael Horan was fatally injured upon arriving at the scene, responding to a call about a “man with a firearm” inside the store, according to police.

“The circumstances of what led to the shooting are currently being investigated,” Assistant Police Chief MJ Harris said during a press briefing on Monday.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene, leading to a high-speed chase. The individual was eventually apprehended by the Duplin County Sheriff’s Office. Harris assured the public that there is no ongoing threat.

Remembering Officer Horan
Horan had served with the Greensboro Police Department since early 2018. Described as an “excellent officer” by Harris, he was highly respected both within the department and the wider community.
Before joining the police force, Horan served for 18 years in the U.S. Coast Guard, where he earned recognition for his bravery, including rescuing a father and son from dangerous rip currents.
“Simply put, we are heartbroken,” Greensboro City Manager Trey Davis stated during the briefing.

The Greensboro Police Department has requested the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to lead the investigation into the shooting.
