Niagara Falls, N.Y. — A tragic incident at Niagara Falls claimed the lives of a mother and her two children after they crossed a safety guard rail on Luna Island, authorities said. New York State Police confirmed Wednesday that the act was “intentional in nature.”

The incident took place around 9 p.m. on Monday, when passersby reported seeing people enter the Falls, according to New York State Trooper James O’Callaghan.

The mother, identified as 33-year-old Chianti Means, and her two children, 9-year-old Roman Rossman and 5-month-old Mecca Means, crossed the guard rail and went over the Falls, police stated. The family was from the Niagara Falls area.

“The investigation has determined that this incident was intentional in nature, though the circumstances remain under investigation,” New York State Police said in a press release. Despite search and rescue efforts, police reported that they were unsuccessful in saving the victims.

O’Callaghan noted that it took several days for investigators to piece together the details of the incident. He highlighted the extensive safety measures in place at Luna Island, which is located on the north side of Goat Island between the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, saying, “It’s not something where they just stumbled in.”

O’Callaghan added that police are working closely with the family to provide them with answers and “closure.” However, he acknowledged that while the intent was clear, the reasons remain difficult to explain.
