A 47-year-old man from Massachusetts has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon after allegedly shooting another person during an altercation at a pro-Israel demonstration in Newton, officials announced Thursday evening.
The victim, who sustained life-threatening injuries, is currently receiving treatment at a local hospital, authorities stated during a brief press conference.
The incident occurred around 6:40 p.m. when Newton Police responded to reports near Washington and Harvard Street, where a small group of people were participating in a pro-Israel demonstration, according to Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan.
An individual, who was not part of the demonstration, was walking on the opposite side of the street when an exchange of words took place between him and the demonstrators, Ryan explained.
The individual then crossed the street, returned to his side, and crossed again before physically confronting one of the demonstrators, leading to a “scuffle,” Ryan said.
“During the scuffle, the individual who approached the group was shot by a member of the demonstrating group,” she added.
The 47-year-old alleged shooter was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, as well as violation of a constitutional right causing injury, Ryan informed the press. His arraignment is scheduled for Friday at the Newton District Court.
