A man clearing out a house turned over 80 firearms, 140 kilograms (309 pounds) of ammunition, and a World War II-era grenade, authorities reported.

Largest Batch Yet

Among the items handed over were 62 pistols, 18 other firearms — including rifles and submachine guns — various weapon parts, and ammunition. The hand grenade, believed to date back to World War II, will be examined further.

“This is clearly the largest batch we have received so far,” said Thomas Kristensen, a spokesperson for Central and West Zealand Police, speaking to broadcaster TV2.

Police announced they would notify the National Museum of Denmark to evaluate whether any of the items should be preserved for historical purposes.

Weapons Amnesty Details

The amnesty, running throughout November, allows Danish citizens to turn in weapons without fear of prosecution. Officials hope this measure will reduce the risk of criminal groups acquiring illegal arms.

Denmark has experienced an uptick in gang-related violence in recent years, with criminal groups battling for control over territories and drugs.

In the first 12 days of the amnesty, over 8,400 items have been surrendered, according to official figures.

Safety Concerns at Police Stations

Some police stations had to be temporarily evacuated due to citizens handing over potentially dangerous explosives, such as grenades.

“Well-intentioned citizens walk into our police stations to hand over hand grenades and other explosives,” said Sune Fletcher Hjortel of the Danish national police.

Strict Gun Laws

Denmark enforces strict gun control laws, prohibiting the acquisition, possession, or use of firearms and dangerous weapons without a police permit. Hunters and others authorized to own weapons must store them in secured lockers when not in use.

Historical Context

Similar weapons amnesty programs were held in 2009, 2013, and 2017, according to the tabloid Ekstra Bladet. These efforts have consistently aimed to enhance public safety and prevent the circulation of illegal arms.

The latest amnesty underscores Denmark’s commitment to addressing escalating gang violence while preserving public safety.
