Protective Order Details
The Carlsbad Police Department filed for the emergency protective order on Tuesday in Superior Court, citing allegations that Paffendorf was involved in “plotting a mass shooting” with Natalie “Samantha” Rupnow, the 15-year-old suspected shooter in Monday’s deadly attack at the school.
FBI agents detained Paffendorf after uncovering alleged messages in which he admitted to planning to “arm himself with explosives and a gun” and target a government building, according to court records obtained by media.
While Paffendorf has not been charged with a crime, the protective order requires him to surrender all firearms, ammunition, and magazines to law enforcement or sell them to a licensed firearms dealer within 48 hours.

Statements from Authorities
The Carlsbad Police Department addressed public concerns, stating Thursday:
“Carlsbad is not the lead agency on this investigation, but we are in communication with our federal partners, and we do not believe there to be a threat to our city. Because this is an ongoing investigation being handled by another agency, there are no other details to share at the moment.”
The FBI also confirmed that there are no known ongoing threats in California or Wisconsin related to this case.
“The Madison Police Department is leading the ongoing investigation into the school shooting in Wisconsin, with the assistance of the Milwaukee and San Diego field offices of the FBI, the Carlsbad Police Department, and other law enforcement partners,” the agency stated.
