Police are investigating after human remains were discovered inside a suitcase on Long Island on Tuesday.
Officers responded to a 911 call early Tuesday morning about “suspicious activity” in a wooded area near an apartment building in Huntington Station, New York, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.
Upon arrival, officers found the body of a deceased individual inside the suitcase near the building, as stated in a police press release.
The victim’s identity and cause of death remain unknown at this time.
The Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy to determine further details, according to authorities.
Police are urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward.
A resident of the apartment complex told media that she heard a woman screaming around 3 a.m. on Sunday.

Another resident described the police response, stating, “The police came, lifted the suitcase, and saw it was a body. The smell was rancid. Potent.”
