Human remains that had been decomposing for an extended period were recently discovered just off a public Utah hiking trail, according to authorities.

The Washington City Police Department confirmed the discovery near the Bone Wash Trail and Elephant Arch hiking area, located in Washington City, southern Utah—approximately 125 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada.

On January 12, 2025, a hiker exploring the Elephant Arch hike reported what appeared to be human remains.
“Officers from Washington City Police and Deputies from Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded promptly to the scene and confirmed the presence of human remains in various forms of decomposition, indicating they had been there for an extended period of time,” the department stated.

Identification and Investigation
Detectives began processing the scene and identified the remains as belonging to a male individual.
The remains were transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office for further examination to determine the cause of death. As of now, foul play is not suspected.

The deceased’s identity has been confirmed by authorities, and his family has been notified, though the name has not yet been publicly released.
