An Irish woman made an unexpected discovery this week upon returning home from a horse-riding adventure in Kenya. Twelve days after her trip, she stumbled upon a scorpion nestled in her luggage in Wicklow, Ireland, on the country’s east coast, over 4,000 miles away from its African habitat.
Identified as a fat-tailed scorpion, commonly found in Africa and the Middle East, the arachnid was promptly named Kenny by the woman, Lorraine Dempsey. Concerned for the creature’s well-being, she reached out to the National Reptile Zoo in Kilkenny, which graciously accepted custody of the unexpected guest.
However, Kenny’s arrival was not without drama. Initially missing, the adventurous scorpion was later located under a bed after a 90-minute search. Dempsey humorously labeled a box “Scorpion – Do not open!” to contain the critter safely.
Sharing her astonishment on Facebook, Dempsey described her brief encounter with Kenny and the subsequent scramble to secure him. James Hennessy, director of the zoo, explained that such incidents of small animals stowing away in luggage are more common than people realize, citing instances of spiders and geckos inadvertently hitching rides.
While the fat-tailed scorpion’s sting is not considered medically significant, it could cause discomfort and pose potential challenges for individuals with respiratory issues. Fortunately, the situation didn’t escalate, given the scorpion’s harmless nature compared to more dangerous species like the deathstalker scorpion, also native to Kenya.

Reflecting on the unusual experience, Dempsey bid farewell to Kenny, expressing a hint of nostalgia for the unexpected visitor. She expressed a desire for the zoo to keep him, enabling her to revisit her unlikely companion.
