An explosion in a New Jersey neighborhood on Thursday resulted in two fatalities, and two missing individuals, and left a baby fighting for her life, while a teen sustained injuries following a devastating explosion.

The emergency services were alerted to the incident in Buena Borough at approximately 10:35 a.m. on Thursday morning, as revealed in a news conference by Franklin Township Police Chief, Matthew DeCesari, held on Thursday night. Upon arrival, responders were confronted with a house entirely engulfed in flames, along with a 1-year-old girl and a 16-year-old girl who had sustained injuries.

Describing the scene, Chief DeCesari stated, “The residence was fully engulfed when I arrived. All indications are that this thing went up very fast and it was a lot to try to fight.”

Both the injured baby and the teenager were airlifted to St. Christopher’s Hospital in Philadelphia, with the infant in critical condition while the teen’s condition was deemed stable.

As of now, authorities have not released the identities of the two deceased individuals and the two missing persons. However, Chief DeCesari mentioned that the residence where the explosion occurred was occupied by a 2-year-old boy, a 3-year-old girl, and two men, aged 52 and 73. The blaze also affected at least two other neighboring homes.

Witnesses, like Adriann Macario, reported feeling the impact of the explosion as far as two blocks away. Macario described the force as strong enough to knock items off the bathroom shelves.

Following investigations, authorities determined that the fire resulted from an explosion within one of the homes. The cause of the blast remains uncertain, prompting a criminal investigation.

Multiple agencies, including the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office, the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, as well as the New Jersey State Police, are collaborating on the investigation.
