THC Gummies Should Now be Safer in Minnesota

New testing rules have been implemented in Minnesota to enhance the safety of cannabis products, making them safer than they were a few months ago. These rules require most businesses producing THC products derived from hemp to undergo extensive testing. However, despite these measures, individuals using cannabis products still face challenges in consistently determining their quality.

To ensure the safety and potency of their products, Nothing But Hemp, a manufacturer of hemp-derived THC gummies, sends samples to a lab in Florida for testing before releasing them to store shelves. Recent lab tests confirmed that a batch of their gummies named “Agent Orange” contained THC levels below the maximum limit of 5 mg. The lab also ensures the products are free from harmful substances such as poisons, heavy metals, and residual chemicals from the distilling process.

Prior to the enactment of the recreational cannabis law signed by Governor Tim Walz five weeks ago, testing for hemp-derived products was less rigorous and infrequent. An investigation revealed that some products had significantly higher THC levels than permitted. Under the new regulations, every batch of THC products must undergo laboratory testing.

Steven Brown, the CEO of Nothing but Hemp, acknowledges that the new testing requirements have increased costs but believes they are necessary to prioritize consumer safety. He compares the previous situation to the “Wild Wild West,” where spot testing was common. Although Brown appreciates the stricter regulations, he expresses concerns about the inconsistency in results across different labs due to variations in instruments and techniques used.

The state Office of Cannabis Management will be responsible for overseeing and regulating the labs and the businesses utilizing them. Parker Smith, the owner of an Ilios Solutions testing facility in Massachusetts and a soon-to-be-opened facility in Eden Prairie, advocates for the involvement of scientific experts in establishing uniform regulations for testing methods and equipment. Smith believes that these regulations should support business growth while ensuring product safety.

State officials informed the media that the process of formulating the rules is still in its preliminary stages and is anticipated to take several months.
