Six teenagers are currently standing trial in Paris for their alleged involvement in the beheading of a teacher, Samuel Paty, who had shown caricatures of the prophet of Islam to his class. Paty, a history and geography teacher, was killed on October 16, 2020, by an 18-year-old of Chechen origin who had become radicalized. The attacker was subsequently shot dead by the police.
The incident unfolded after Paty’s name was shared on social media following a class debate on free expression, during which he displayed caricatures from the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo. The cartoons had previously triggered a terrorist attack on the newspaper’s newsroom in January 2015.
The trial is taking place in a Paris juvenile court, with proceedings closed to the public in accordance with French law regarding minors. The defendants, arriving with their faces concealed behind masks and hoods, include a teenage girl accused of making false allegations about Paty. Five other students, aged 14 and 15 at the time, are facing charges of criminal conspiracy related to preparing aggravated violence.
The prosecution alleges that these students waited for Paty outside his school, identified him as the killer, and were promised payment for their actions. The investigation revealed that the attacker knew the teacher’s name and school address but lacked the means to identify him independently.

Antoine Ory, a lawyer for one of the defendants, stated that his client was unaware of the criminal plan and is now tormented by remorse. The defendants face a potential 2 1/2-year prison sentence, with the trial scheduled to conclude on December 8.

Another eight adults, including the father of the teenage girl charged with false allegations, will be sent to trial later. This includes a radical Islamic activist who assisted in disseminating messages naming Paty. The trial occurs amid heightened tensions following a recent school attack by a former student suspected of Islamic radicalization. This incident resulted in a teacher’s death and injuries to three others, prompting French authorities to deploy 7,000 additional soldiers nationwide to enhance security and vigilance.
