Sheryl Sandberg, a pivotal figure in Facebook’s evolution into a powerhouse of digital advertising, has announced her departure from the board of Meta, the overarching entity of Facebook.
In a heartfelt Facebook message, Sandberg expressed her gratitude and fond recollections, stating, “With a heart filled with gratitude and a mind filled with memories, I have informed the Meta board of my decision not to seek re-election this May.”
Sandberg, who left Google to join Facebook in 2008, played a significant role in the company’s growth, especially leading up to its IPO in 2012. As Meta’s second-in-command under CEO Mark Zuckerberg, she faced scrutiny over some of the company’s controversies.
Although she resigned as Meta’s COO in 2022, Sandberg continued her involvement as a board member. Her tenure at Facebook and later Meta, as COO spanned over 14 years, and she contributed as a board member for 12 years.
Sandberg noted in her post, “Under Mark’s leadership, along with Javi Olivan, Justin Osofsky, Nicola Mendelsohn, and their teams, Meta has demonstrated its strength and future readiness, making this an appropriate time for me to step back.”
She intends to maintain her connection with the company in an advisory capacity. In the previous year, Sandberg revealed her initiative to launch a leadership program for girls through her foundation, addressing persistent gender inequalities. This program encompasses a curriculum for middle-school students and resources for adults.
