Sarah Silverman Sues Meta and OpenAI for Copyright Infringement

Share

Comedian Sarah Silverman, along with authors Richard Kadrey and Christopher Golden, has taken legal action against Meta Platforms and OpenAI, accusing them of copyright infringement. The lawsuits, filed as proposed class action suits in a San Francisco federal court on Friday, claim that Meta, the parent company of Facebook, and OpenAI used their copyrighted content without permission to train their artificial intelligence language models.

Neither Meta nor OpenAI, a Microsoft-backed private company, have responded to requests for comment as of Sunday.

These lawsuits highlight the legal risks faced by developers of chatbots who utilize copyrighted material to create applications that provide realistic responses to user queries.

Silverman, Kadrey, and Golden assert that Meta and OpenAI employed their works without authorization in the development of their large language models. These models are marketed as powerful tools for automating tasks through human-like conversation.

The lawsuit against Meta alleges that leaked information pertaining to the company’s AI business reveals the unauthorized use of the plaintiffs’ work.

In the case against OpenAI, the plaintiffs contend that summaries generated by ChatGPT, the bot created by OpenAI, indicate that their copyrighted content was utilized in the training process. While the lawsuit acknowledges that the summaries may contain inaccuracies, it asserts that ChatGPT retains knowledge of specific works present in its training dataset.
