The intense heat wave that scorched the West Coast last week is now moving to the East Coast, prompting health departments to brace for heat-related emergencies.
As of Monday morning, over 100 million people across 33 states were under heat alerts.
Philadelphia is particularly affected, with a heat index — which combines temperature and humidity to reflect how hot it feels — expected to reach 104 degrees on Monday. The city’s health department has declared a heat health emergency.
“We will have more than 150 cooling centers available for residents in need,” Mayor Cherelle Parker announced. “Please call 311 to locate a nearby cooling center. Check on your elderly neighbors to ensure their safety. By looking out for one another, we can weather this heat wave together.”
Alongside Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore are under an excessive heat warning, the most severe heat alert, on Monday.
New York City and Boston are under a heat advisory until Tuesday.
Several cities may see record daily highs on Monday, including Raleigh, North Carolina (projected 101, record 99); Washington, D.C. (projected 100, record 100); Baltimore (projected 101, record 102); Reading, Pennsylvania (projected 100, record 100); Worcester, Massachusetts (projected 91, record 92); and Manchester, New Hampshire (projected 96, record 96).

The extreme heat will intensify on the East Coast on Tuesday and could persist into Wednesday.
A cold front is expected to bring relief to the East Coast by Wednesday night into Thursday, ending the record heat.
