22-year-old rapper Lil Tjay was shot early this morning, right after midnight in Edgewater, New Jersey. He was immediately taken in for emergency surgery.
His condition remains unclear.
According to TMZ reports, two victims were injured during the shootout which took place at two separate locations. One victim was shot several times at a Chipotle while another was shot once at a neighboring Exxon station.
Both incidents happened inside the Promenade Shopping Center.
The two 22-year-old victims were taken to the hospital.
The identity of the second victim is currently unknown.
Police are looking for the suspect(s). Officials are unsure of the motive behind the shooting.
The police were also said to have been looking at a red Dodge Durango parked at the shopping center at 7AM this morning. The vehicle had a bullet hole in the driver’s window. Blood-stained towels were also found on the scene.
Prosecutor Mark Musella released the following quote on the incident.
“Responding officers found a 22-year-old victim with multiple gunshot wounds.”
“Officers also responded to the Exxon Station located at 478 River Road, Edgewater, where they located another 22-year-old victim with a gunshot wound. Both victims were transported to an area hospital where they are being treated.”
The prosecutor’s office did not respond to requests for further comment.
Lil Tjay, whose real name is Tione Jayden Merritt, released his debut album, “True to Myself” in 2019. It features collaborations with rappers Lil Wayne and Lil Baby. It debuted at the number 5 spot on the Billboard Hot 200 albums chart.
Fans and colleagues flocked to social media to send support for Tjay at this difficult time.
“There’s no chance we can lose Lil Tjay, such a talent. Speedy recovery,” wrote Twitter user FifaJM18.
Music producer CashMoneyAp posted, “Prayers up for Lil Tjay.”
“Pray for my lil bro lil Tjay,” wrote fellow rapper French Montana.
