A 15-year-old Kansas high schooler faces charges after a video captured a racially charged altercation in the hallway. The incident occurred on November 15 at Shawnee Mission East High School in Prairie Village.
The video shows Brey’anna Brown, a sophomore, engaging in a verbal exchange with another student who responded with offensive language and racial slurs. The situation escalated as the male student aggressively approached Brown, leading to a physical altercation where both students exchanged punches for about 20 seconds before adults intervened.

The male student, unnamed due to being a minor, was charged with aggravated battery for causing significant bodily harm. His first court appearance is scheduled for December 6. Brown, who was also suspended from school, expressed regret over the incident but emphasized her choice to stand up for herself.

The Shawnee Mission School District acknowledged the incident, expressing sadness but not providing details about the students’ punishments. The community has responded, with a walkout at the high school advocating for the protection of Black women and students of color. Brown’s mother, Linyka, expressed heartbreak over the incident and her desire to shield her daughter from such experiences.
