A Pennsylvania man, 84-year-old Barton Seltmann, has been accused of fatally assaulting his 85-year-old wife, Margaret Seltmann, following a dispute over funds for veterinary care for their cat.
Law enforcement officials arrested Barton Seltmann on Tuesday after discovering Margaret Seltmann’s lifeless body in their residence in Lower Pottsgrove Township. Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin R. Steele and Lower Pottsgrove Township Police Chief Richard Bell issued a joint statement detailing the tragic incident.
The altercation between the couple escalated during a disagreement about financial matters related to their cat’s veterinary needs, leading to a physical confrontation. According to the official statement, evidence found at the scene indicated that Margaret Seltmann sustained multiple head injuries while lying on the kitchen floor.
Barton Seltmann himself dialed 911 to report an “unresponsive female.” Upon arrival, police officers observed him on a rear porch with blood on his hands, face, and clothing. Initially, he informed 911 operators that he believed someone else had beaten his wife. Later, he changed his account, admitting to beating her after she allegedly threatened him with a knife.
In an affidavit of probable cause, Seltmann claimed that he used a chair to push his wife, causing her to fall and hit her head on the floor. Despite not seeing a knife in her hand, he asserted that he repeatedly punched her and used a candle holder to strike her in the head. Reportedly, Margaret Seltmann uttered the words, “You’re killing me,” during the altercation. Investigators discovered a small kitchen knife beneath her body.

A forensic pathologist from the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office determined that Margaret Seltmann’s cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head, classifying her death as a homicide.
