A tragic incident unfolded at Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School in North Carolina on Monday, where a 14-year-old student stabbed two classmates during a brawl in the school’s gym, resulting in the death of a 15-year-old male, as confirmed by the police.
The disturbing event was captured on a cell phone video, depicting numerous students rushing into the gym as the suspect produced what appeared to be a knife, striking the two victims aged 15 and 16.
Raleigh Police responded to the incident at 11 a.m. after a school resource officer reported a juvenile being stabbed. They promptly secured the premises and administered first aid to the victims. Both injured students were transported to a nearby hospital, where the 15-year-old succumbed to his injuries. The 16-year-old is currently hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
The identity of the accused, a minor, has not been disclosed. However, he is in custody and was charged with murder on a juvenile petition on Monday evening, according to the Raleigh Police Department.
Raleigh Police Chief Estella Patterson assured the public that there is no ongoing threat to the school or the community. Collaborating closely with Wake County Public School officials, Patterson stated they are working to identify those directly involved in the altercation.
In response to the incident, Southeast Raleigh Magnet High School implemented a code red lockdown until Wake County security resolved the situation. Superintendent Robert Taylor expressed condolences to the victim’s family and announced the cancellation of classes and after-school activities on Tuesday to allow the community time to process the tragedy.

Principal George Harden Jr. emphasized the victim’s significance within the school community, assuring the availability of the district’s crisis team and employee support and wellness program for those affected.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Cherelle McLaughlin, a mother of a student involved in the fight, asserted that her son was acting in self-defense and expressed skepticism about him bringing the knife to school. The school, although lacking metal detectors, conducts searches when there is “reasonable suspicion” of a student possessing a weapon, according to Taylor. He pledged a thorough review of safety processes and protocols in the aftermath of the tragedy.
