According to Newport News police Chief Steve Drew, the mother of the child that shot a teacher in Virginia elementary school may face charges.
The boy took the and went to school with the weapon inside his backpack. The 6-year-old boy allegedly opened fire in a classroom at Richneck Elementary School, injuring and hospitalizing a teacher.
Drew is unwavering in his pursuit of the truth about what happened. He stated that they would seek family records from Child Protective Services. To gather more information, their team will consider having psychologists conduct a behavioral examination on the suspect’s classmates.
He also stated that the Commonwealth’s attorney would use all information gathered during the investigation in sentencing the parents.
Meanwhile, Andrew Block of the University of Virginia Law School explained that the parents could face legal consequences. He stated that failure to properly secure the weapon would be a misdemeanor.
However, it may be difficult to prove without additional information.
The boy was taken into custody and evaluated at a hospital.
The police identified the victim as Abigail Zwerner, a 25-year-old teacher. Despite being shot in the chest by the student, she was able to assist the other students in reaching safety.
Despite being shot in a critical location, Zwerner is now stable. Her sister is also said to have set up a GoFundMe page for her recovery.
