A tragic incident occurred near the summit of Germany’s highest peak when an 18-year-old man was fatally struck by lightning, police reported on Monday.
The young man, a German resident, who was struck by lightning, was part of a trio that had taken the mountain railway up the Zugspitze late Sunday afternoon. From there, they continued to the summit, which required a climb of approximately 80 meters (260 feet) from a popular visitor terrace.
As the group descended from the summit, a storm brought repeated lightning strikes, one of which fatally electrocuted the 18-year-old. The stormy conditions hampered recovery efforts, police said.
The Zugspitze, located in the Alps on Germany’s border with Austria, stands at 2,962 meters (9,718 feet) above sea level.
