A freak accident happened while a 20-year-old man was masturbating which left him hospitalized in the intensive care unit. The man was a Swiss patient and has remained unnamed, but he suffered a rare lung injury that doctors say is normally caused by rigorous exercise or violent coughing.
This guy was not messing around. He ended up being hospitalized for three days in the ICU. The reasoning? Air had escaped from his lungs and gotten lodged in his ribcage, according to the case report shared by LAD Bible.
The man was experiencing breathlessness and chest pains while he was doing his thing in bed, so he ended up taking himself to the hospital. Once at the hospital, they determined that he really did some damage to himself. The patient had a swollen face and crunching noises from his neck down to his arms, LAD Bible reported.
After checking him out, doctors diagnosed him with “spontaneous” pneumomediastinum (SPM), which is the leakage of air from the lung to the ribs. While this diagnosis has happened before during sex, this is the first case of it to be caused by masturbation, so he has something to be proud of.
However, we don’t think there was ever any shame or embarrassment for this guy, since he showed up at the hospital and told medics he was experiencing sharp chest pain while masturbating.
Doctors at Cantonal Hospital in Winterthur said his case was “unusual” and trapped air had spread around his body and even made its way up to his skull. Some cases of this can cause a collapsed lung.
When talking with the patient, he stated he did not take any drugs or smoke and confirmed he wasn’t participating in any strenuous exercise or suffering from a cough prior to the injury. Because of all of that, the doctors labeled the case “spontaneous.”
According to the doctors, they said, “Predisposing factors are history of smoking, acute asthma and recreational drug use (especially cocaine and heroin). Except for a history of mild, non-acute asthma, no inciting factors were noticed in our patient.”

After several days in the hospital, the patient was discharged and I am sure he will be doing things a little differently moving forward.
