LSU safety Greg Brooks has recently undergone surgery to remove a substantial brain tumor, according to an announcement made by his family on Wednesday. The procedure, which took place on the preceding Friday, was described as successful, but the family is currently awaiting the results of a biopsy.
Greg Brooks had unexpectedly left the LSU football team last week, leading to his absence during the 12th-ranked Tigers’ decisive 41-14 victory over Mississippi State.
LSU’s head coach, Brian Kelly, had characterized Brooks’ departure as a “medical emergency” on Monday but refrained from providing further specifics due to the family’s wish to keep the details private until they were ready to share them.
LSU is scheduled to host Arkansas this upcoming Saturday, the team for which Greg Brooks played three seasons before transferring to LSU in 2022.
In their announcement, the Brooks family expressed their support for Greg as he continues to battle his health condition. They highlighted his extraordinary strength of character and acknowledged that he now requires their support more than ever.
Greg Brooks, who hails from the New Orleans area, was a starter in 13 games for the Tigers during the previous season. In that season, he made notable contributions with two interceptions, a sack, a forced fumble, and three tackles for losses. He concluded the season with five passes defended and 66 solo or assisted tackles.
Brooks also participated in the first two games of the current season, contributing to eight tackles.
During Greg Brooks’ presence on the field, LSU often utilized a three-safety lineup. However, in his absence during the last game, the Tigers opted for a formation featuring three linebackers. Freshman safety Ryan Yiates received more playing time as LSU shifted to a formation with five defensive backs.
