A few days after fleeing its owner in Manhattan, the lost dog was discovered under the Port of Independence, New Jersey pier. TwitterBear, a Leonberger-Bernese Mountain Dog cross, escaped his collar during a trip to the pet store, ran 30 blocks, and jumped into the Hudson River.

On Saturday, December 3, a terrified puppy escaped while accompanying its owner to the pet store, ran a mile and a half, and dove into the Hudson River. Fortunately, the lost dog was discovered across the water three days later in Edgewater, New Jersey.

Bear, a young Leonberger-Bernese Mountain Dog mix, was a new addition to Wolpin’s family, having arrived in New York just a week before his escape. Ellen Wolpin purchased Bear intending to train him to be a companion dog for her son, who has seizures.

They were on their way to a pet store to buy a new harness on Manhattan’s Upper West Side for the frightened puppy when he became agitated.

Wolpin said to NJ.com that Bear, the lost dog was a very anxious dog and was afraid to leave the apartment. That’s why she never lets him off the leash when she walks the dog.

But Bear startled Wolpin on Saturday afternoon when he escaped his collar and began running near West End Avenue and 80th Street. Someone tried to assist her in catching Bear, but that only made the dog anxious.

A person noticed Bear running through Riverside Park and attempted to capture him, but the little pup was too quick and escaped.

He was last seen paddling in the Hudson River over a mile away.

On Tuesday morning, Wolpin received a shocking phone call that her dog, Bear, had been found. The dog is safe and unharmed across the Edgewater, New Jersey, river. A local heard him barking from the pier, he called the fire department to come and rescue him.

The Edgewater Fire Department used Bear’s microchip to track down his owners and then called Wolpin to inform her.

Bear reunited with his family and is still getting used to life in the big city. Fortunately, the dog is in good health, despite the 2 days in the water.
