Early on Thursday, a volcanic eruption commenced in southwestern Iceland, with lava spouts reaching heights of up to 80 meters, according to the country’s meteorological office.
The Icelandic Met Office reported, “At 5:30 this morning, an intense seismic activity commenced northeast of Mt. Sýlingarfell. Roughly 30 minutes later, a volcanic eruption ensued at the location.”
Officials stated that photographs captured by a surveillance flight operated by the Icelandic Coast Guard indicated that the eruption was unfolding near the site of the December 18 eruption.
A previous eruption in Iceland on January 14 had resulted in lava streaming into Grindavik, a small town that had been evacuated prior to the event. The latest fissure spanned approximately 3 kilometers, as confirmed by the meteorological office.

Gisli Olafsson, a Member of Parliament, remarked on social media, “This time, the eruption is situated a bit further north than the December event and at a greater distance from the town of Grindavik.”
