In a significant development, Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, has been indicted on gun charges, as confirmed by court documents. This historic indictment comes after a previously negotiated plea deal that could have concluded a lengthy investigation into Hunter Biden unraveled.
It also coincides with House Republicans initiating an impeachment inquiry to obtain bank records and other documents related to the president and his son.
The oversight of this case falls under the purview of special counsel David Weiss, who was also in charge of the investigation. Notably, Weiss, originally appointed by former President Trump, continued to serve as U.S. attorney for Delaware due to the sensitive and exceptional nature of investigating a sitting president’s son within the Justice Department, an arm of the executive branch headed by the president.
U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland designated Weiss as special counsel in August, following the breakdown of negotiations concerning tax and gun-related charges.
