Hamas Releases 4-Year-Old American Girl Held Hostage on Her Birthday

A young American girl, Abigail Mor Edan, who spent her fourth birthday as a hostage of Hamas, was released on Sunday as part of the ceasefire and hostage exchange agreement between Israel and the militant group. The fragile truce, now in its third day, has involved the release of Palestinian prisoners by Israel and the entry of aid into the Gaza Strip.

Abigail’s harrowing ordeal began when she turned four, as she was in her father’s arms when a Hamas gunman shot him. He fell on top of her, and Abigail, covered in her father’s blood, managed to crawl out from under him. After seeking refuge in a neighbor’s bomb shelter, she later witnessed terrorists taking her mother, three siblings, and herself out of the kibbutz.

Abigail’s older brothers survived the attack, but they tragically witnessed the murders of their parents. In a recent interview, Abigail’s great-aunt Liz Hirsh Naftali disclosed that the girl’s parents were killed in their Kfar Aza kibbutz home.

The release of 17 hostages, including 13 Israelis and four Thai nationals, on Saturday faced delays as Hamas accused Israel of violating the agreement. The militant group claimed that Israel did not deliver the promised aid to northern Gaza and did not release Palestinian hostages in the agreed-upon order. Despite the obstacles, the exchange took place, leading to the release of 39 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.

The International Committee of the Red Cross facilitated the return of 33 Palestinians to the West Bank. In total, two dozen hostages, comprising 13 Israelis, 10 Thai nationals, and one Filipino citizen, were freed from Gaza in exchange for the release of 39 Palestinians held in Israel.

The temporary ceasefire, brokered by the U.S., Qatar, Egypt, and Israel, is scheduled to end on Monday. The terms include the expectation that Hamas releases at least 50 hostages in exchange for 150 Palestinians held in Israeli jails by the agreement’s conclusion. Israel committed to extending the ceasefire for an additional day for every 10 hostages released.

As part of the agreement, hundreds of aid trucks carrying water, food, medical supplies, and fuel have entered Gaza, providing much-needed relief to the affected region.
