Former NFL Player Sergio Brown Enters Not Guilty Plea in Mother’s Murder Case

On Wednesday, former NFL player Sergio Brown entered a plea of not guilty to charges of first-degree murder and concealing a homicide in connection with the September death of his mother, 73-year-old Myrtle Brown.

The lifeless body of Myrtle Brown was discovered on September 16 near a creek in Maywood, located approximately 12 miles west of Chicago. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office determined that her death resulted from blunt force trauma, concluding that she had been assaulted, ultimately classifying her demise as a homicide.

Sergio Brown, 35, and his mother shared a residence in Maywood. Following his arrest in San Diego on October 10 and subsequent deportation from Mexico, where he was apprehended, Brown was extradited to Maywood two weeks later. During the investigation, Brown confessed to traveling to Mexico with his mother’s belongings, and prosecutors revealed that he had used her credit card in Mexico following her death.

Prosecutors argued that DNA samples taken from beneath Myrtle Brown’s fingernails matched those from a toothbrush found in Sergio Brown’s bedroom. However, public defender Robert Fox contested this claim, asserting that no one had witnessed the alleged crime.

“There’s no direct evidence. It’s all circumstantial,” Fox argued during a detention hearing for Brown in October.
