FBI Probes Series of Suspicious Letters Containing Powder Sent to Election Workers

The FBI and U.S. Postal Inspection Service Investigate Series of Suspicious Letters Containing Powder Sent to Election Workers Across Multiple States.

Law enforcement authorities have launched investigations into a spate of incidents involving letters containing suspicious powder sent to election workers in various states. In one instance, the powder tested positive for fentanyl in a field test, though no adverse health effects have been reported. The substances are currently undergoing further lab testing.

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has labeled the incidents, particularly those in Fulton County, as domestic terrorism. He affirmed collaboration with state and federal partners to ascertain if additional Georgia officials are being targeted. The Chairman of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, Robb Pitts, emphasized the need for enhanced election safety, citing the recent opening of the Elections Hub to bolster security operations leading up to the 2024 elections.

Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs characterized the events in his state as “acts of terrorism” designed to threaten elections. Envelopes containing unknown powdery substances were sent to elections offices in King, Pierce, Skagit, and Spokane counties. Similar incidents occurred during the state’s August 1 primary, with substances found in envelopes sent to King and Okanogan counties.

Increased threats against election officials nationwide have been reported, with some attributing them to unfounded claims of a rigged election, particularly by former President Donald Trump, following the 2020 election. Raffensperger stressed the importance of ensuring election officials are free from fear and intimidation to maintain free, fair, and secure elections in Georgia.

The FBI acknowledged responding to multiple incidents involving suspicious letters sent to ballot counting centers in several states, refraining from providing further details due to ongoing matters. California, Georgia, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington state have all reported similar incidents targeting election officers or workers.

The FBI field offices in Portland, Seattle, and Atlanta issued statements acknowledging their responses to incidents involving suspicious letters sent to various ballot counting centers. The Texas Department of Public Safety also responded to a report of a letter containing an unknown substance sent to the state attorney general’s office in Austin.

California Secretary of State Shirley Weber confirmed federal and state investigations into two suspicious envelopes intercepted by the U.S. Postal Service, headed to election facilities in Los Angeles and Sacramento. While there is no confirmation of toxic substances, precautions are advised.

FBI Swatting

The Nevada Secretary of State’s Office reported that the federal government alerted local authorities about suspicious letters addressed to election offices in multiple states, including Nevada, and is coordinating with the FBI, Postal Service, and other agencies.
