Local officials reported that two skiers lost their lives and another was injured in a fatal avalanche on Mont Blanc, while a hiker died as an outcome of an unrelated event in the French Alps.
According to a statement from the regional authorities of Haute-Savoie, an avalanche hit an unmarked skiing zone at Saint-Gervais-les-Bains resort on Thursday. The location was situated approximately 7,545 feet high or 2,300 meters above sea level.
According to the regional authorities, emergency response teams initiated a search operation that involved multiple mountain rescue personnel. The outcome of their effort revealed two fatalities- both male and female – while they were able to bring an injured person along with five others out of danger through prompt rescue measures.
An investigation has been initiated by authorities to ascertain the cause of the avalanche.
The treacherous weather conditions involving rain, snow and warmth were commented on by Saint-Gervais Mayor Jean-Marc Peillex. In his conversation with BFM television, he expressed sorrow towards the tragic incident while emphasizing the availability of marked ski routes that are safe for use. “What happened is absolutely dreadful – a family has been wiped out; this brings us immense sadness in Saint-Gervais,” articulated Peillex.
