A cargo Boeing 747 had to execute an emergency landing on Thursday evening following reports of flames emitting from the aircraft while it was over Miami.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), already scrutinizing Boeing due to a recent emergency landing involving an Alaska Airlines flight caused by a detached door plug, announced on Friday its intention to investigate this new incident involving an Atlas Air flight.
Atlas Air released a statement on Friday confirming that one of its aircraft experienced a problem with at least one engine soon after takeoff, necessitating a safe landing.
A video posted on Instagram by a Miami local late Thursday captured the aircraft flying with what seemed to be a fiery trail behind it. The person recording the video exclaimed in shock at the sight of the plane apparently ablaze.
Atlas Air verified in their statement that Flight 5Y095 landed safely at Miami International Airport (MIA) following an engine issue shortly after takeoff. “The crew adhered to all necessary procedures and successfully returned to MIA. At Atlas, our foremost concern is safety, and we are committed to a detailed inspection to identify the cause,” the airline stated.
The aircraft, bound for Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport in Puerto Rico, had departed at 10:22 p.m. ET on Thursday and returned to Miami at 10:30 p.m., according to the FAA.
This Miami event is the most recent in a series of problems associated with Boeing. It occurs just two weeks following the incident with the Alaska Airlines flight, which led to the FAA’s grounding of Boeing 737 Max 9 planes nationwide. This action disrupted air travel in the U.S., causing numerous flight cancellations.
