On Monday, tech magnate Elon Musk disclosed that Neuralink, his brain-science startup, achieved a significant milestone by successfully implanting a device into a human for the first time. This development marks a potential leap toward creating a product that Musk envisions will empower individuals to control external devices merely through their thoughts.
The revelation was made through Musk’s communication platform, X, where he stated that the undisclosed patient underwent the implant procedure on Sunday and is currently in good recovery. Musk highlighted the early positive signs of “promising neuron spike detection” but refrained from providing additional specifics about the procedure, the individual involved, or the nature of the implanted device.
The concept of brain-computer interfaces, explored by scientists for decades, holds the promise of assisting physically disabled individuals and revolutionizing communication methods. Musk’s announcement, however, lacked independent verification of Neuralink’s progress. Notably, a competitor, Precision Neuroscience, achieved a similar feat last year by successfully implanting its device in a human.
This announcement comes after Neuralink secured approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its inaugural in-human clinical study eight months ago. While the company had announced its intention to recruit patients for the study in September, further details regarding the recent implantation were not immediately available.
Despite requests for additional information, Neuralink, headquartered in San Francisco, did not promptly respond. The FDA, responsible for approving medical devices and potential consumer products, also refrained from commenting on Musk’s disclosure.
Neuralink has consistently emphasized its mission to develop brain implants, such as the Link, to aid patients, particularly those dealing with severe paralysis, in utilizing external technologies. Musk indicated that the inaugural product from Neuralink would be named Telepathy, without specifying whether it represents a new device or a rebranding of a previously announced one.
The company has faced scrutiny in recent years over allegations of mistreatment of monkeys involved in experiments. While the Agriculture Department found no major violations apart from a self-reported incident in 2019, the use of an unapproved sealant during a procedure, concerns about animal welfare have persisted.

Musk envisions that the Telepathy product will enable users, initially those with limb impairments, to control various devices, including phones and computers, through thought alone. He expressed the ambition to facilitate faster communication for individuals facing physical limitations, citing the late Stephen Hawking as an example.

Elon Musk, who co-founded Neuralink in 2016, has integrated it into his portfolio of companies, alongside Tesla and SpaceX. Additionally, Musk acquired X, formerly known as Twitter, in 2022. Neuralink boasts support from over 30 investors, including the Founders Fund led by PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel. Musk has previously indicated his personal intention to undergo the Neuralink implant procedure.
