Cheese Wheels Fatally Crush Italian Man

In northern Italy, a tragic incident has taken the life of Giacomo Chiapparini, the 74-year-old proprietor of a cheese factory. The factory, located near the city of Bergamo, was home to thousands of aging cheese wheels, specifically the renowned Grana Padano, a hard cheese reminiscent of parmesan.

The unfortunate event unfolded when a towering shelf, towering approximately 30 feet high, suddenly gave way within the warehouse. These hefty shelves, designed to hold wheels weighing around 20kg (44lbs) each, succumbed to the forces at play, leading to a domino effect that propelled the substantial cheese wheels into the air, ultimately resulting in a tragic incident that claimed Giacomo Chiapparini’s life.

According to Bortolo Ghislotti, a close friend and neighbor of the victim, the series of events leading to this heartrending event began when a machine designed to cleanse and rotate the cheese wheels alerted them to an issue. Giacomo Chiapparini and his son Tiziano, aged 50, promptly headed to the warehouse to address the concern. This was a common occurrence as the machine would send alerts when wheels were slightly out of alignment.

Following the repair of the problem, Tiziano left the premises, while his father decided to restart the machine. Tragedy struck within seconds as the shelves gave way, resulting in Giacomo Chiapparini being buried under the weight of thousands of cheese wheels. Tiziano narrowly escaped the same fate, having left the warehouse only moments before the collapse.

The local fire brigade swiftly responded to the distress call, arriving at the scene to find a devastating scene of cheese wheels piled atop one another. Daniele Retto, a spokesperson for the local fire brigade department, described the arduous task of meticulously removing each wheel by hand. Sadly, despite their valiant efforts, Giacomo Chiapparini’s life could not be saved.

Bortolo Ghislotti, who not only knew the victim closely but also presided over the local farming district, lamented the inexplicable nature of the tragedy. Reflecting on the incident, he compared it to the earthquake in Emilia Romagna in 2012, recalling that even though thousands of wheels were dislodged during that natural disaster, there were no casualties.

As the community grapples with this devastating loss, authorities are tasked with determining the cause of the shelf’s collapse, along with the precise circumstances surrounding Giacomo Chiapparini’s unfortunate demise. The investigation will seek to discern whether his passing was the result of being crushed or due to asphyxiation.
